Find out information about your ancestors or the population in your area using the census.
Overview
A census gathers statistics about all citizens of the UK including age, religion, employment status, health and living arrangements.
Census data is compiled in the UK every 10 years, and after 100 years the personal data becomes available to the public.
How to use this service
There are two websites to start your census search.
For the 2001 census use the National Statistics website. You'll be able to view detailed statistics about the population of any local authority in the UK, or view national data.
For a census between 1841 and 1901 follow the link to the National Archives website below.
Basic searches are free, but if you would like to see the full record for an individual or household then a small charge is payable.
