Allow others to manage your student finance account

You might find it useful to occasionally let another person - for example, a parent or representative from your college - manage your student finance account or make enquiries on your behalf.

Providing others with access to your account

Data protection law means that the Student Loans Company and Student Finance Direct cannot discuss details of your student finance account with anyone else without your stated permission.

If you want to provide certain people with access to your account, you can give this permission on one of two levels.

You can either:

  • allow them to obtain information about your account, by providing 'consent to share'
  • allow them to make changes to your account, by giving them 'power of attorney'

Allowing others to obtain information about your student finance account

By giving 'consent to share', you authorise the Student Loans Company or Student Finance Direct to provide information about your account (with the exception of your bank details) to others nominated by you.

To give 'consent to share', write to the Student Loans Company:

  • quoting your Student Support number or ART ID
  • providing the full name, address, date of birth and relationship to you, of the person you wish to represent you
  • giving a password for your representative to use, should they contact Student Finance Direct or the Student Loans Company

The nominated person's details will be authenticated by the Student Loans Company or Student Finance Direct before they will release any information.

Allowing others to make changes to your account

By giving a nominated person 'power of attorney', you give the Student Loans Company or Student Finance Direct the right to release to them information relating to your account, and to update your details.

To grant a person power of attorney, you need to fill in a form giving their name, the specific period for which they can act on your behalf, and the specific tasks that they can perform.

As above, the person holding power of attorney will need to have their details authenticated by the Student Loans Company or Student Finance Direct.
