Applying for an adult learning course

The application process varies between different learning providers and courses. You can get help and advice when applying for a course, whether you have to fill in an application form, attend an interview or provide a reference.

Finding out about the application process

You can contact learning providers directly for information about their application and admissions process. Some learning providers may not require a formal application. Many community centres offer drop-in learning opportunities where you can just turn up and join in. Sometimes you need to fill in a quick registration form when you arrive. Tutors can help with this.

You may need to apply online for an e-learning course, and most learning providers provide technical support to help you. You can get free internet access at UK online centres and libraries. For information about your nearest UK online centre, call the helpline or visit the UK online website.

Help with your application

Application procedures may require you to provide:

  • application forms
  • CV
  • personal statements
  • references
  • portfolio (for courses such as art and design)

You can get advice online or direct from the college to which you are applying.

After you have applied

Once you've submitted your application you may need to wait for the course tutor to review it. For some courses you will be invited to an interview, where the tutor finds out about you and you can find out more about the course.

The tutor may then contact the referees you've nominated.
