Applying for the Fee Grant and Course Grant

Use form PTG1 to apply for the Fee Grant and Course Grant. You’ll need to make a separate application for each year of your course.

What to do with your completed form

Fill in the form and take it with you to your college or university at the start of term. The administration office will complete the rest of the form, confirming the details of your course.

You’ll then need to send the completed form either to your local authority or to the Student Loans Company - depending on where you live.

If you are an Open University student

The same rules on the Fee Grant and Course Grant apply, but the Open University deals with its own applications. Contact the Open University directly for a separate application form.

If your circumstances change

It’s important to notify your local authority as soon as possible if there’s a change in your circumstances.

Check form CO2 below for full details, but changes you need to let them know about include:

• changing university or college
• changing or leaving your course
• changing your name or address

Fee Grant and Course Grant: help for part-time students on lower incomes

The maximum you get through the Fee Grant depends on the ‘intensity’ of your course - how long it will take to complete compared to an equivalent full-time course.

For the most intensive courses, the maximum available through the Fee Grant and Course Grant combined is £1,470 for 2009/2010.

If you’re getting certain benefits, you’ll automatically get the maximum help available for your course’s intensity. Otherwise, how much you get depends on your household income and personal circumstances.

Any help you get through the Fee Grant or Course Grant doesn’t have to be repaid.

Extra financial help for part-time students

You may be able to get extra help on top of the Fee Grant or Course Grant if:

• you're on a low income and run into financial difficulty
• you’re disabled or have an impairment, medical condition or specific learning difficulty

Applying for 2008/2009?

For 2008/2009, the maximum available through the Fee Grant and Course Grant combined is £1,435.

Student finance applications close nine months after the start of the academic year. But if you’re still able to apply for the 2008/2009 academic year, you’ll need to complete the 2008/2009 version of form PTG1.
