How to apply for finance - EU students

If you are a student from another European Union (EU) country who doesn’t usually live in the UK, you apply for help towards tuition fees for courses in England, Northern Ireland or Wales using one of the forms below. Send the completed form to the Student Finance Services European Team.

Applying for financial help

If you are an EU student who doesn't usually live in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, you should complete one of the forms on this page to apply for student finance in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.

You'll need to:

  • fill in the relevant application form for your type of course and year of study (there are guidance notes to help you complete the forms)
  • send the completed form to the Student Finance Services European Team
  • make sure you apply by the relevant deadline
only use the forms on this page if you don't usually live in 'the UK or Islands'

Do you qualify for extra support on top of help with tuition fees?

You may be able to get additional support if:

  • you're an EU national who will have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for three years or more by the time you start your course
  • you're a migrant worker from an EEA country or Switzerland living in the UK
  • you're the child of a Turkish worker living in the UK

If this applies to you, don't complete any of the forms in this page. Instead, you'll need to apply in the same way as students from England, Wales or Northern Ireland. See ‘EU students: what type of finance could you qualify for?’ to find out more.

Applying to study in Scotland

If you study in Scotland, applications for student finance are dealt with by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

Application forms for new, full-time students

New, full-time students who apply for their course through UCAS by July will be sent an application form for student finance automatically.

You can also download a form and guidance notes below.

Application forms for continuing full-time students

You'll need to make an application for each year of your course.

If you've applied for student finance before, you should automatically be sent an application form. It will be sent to the address you've given in your country of origin, not the UK address where you'll be living while you study. You can also download forms below.

If you haven't applied for student finance before, you'll need to fill in one of the forms above for new students.

Where do you send the form?

Once you've completed the form, post it to the Student Finance Services European Team.

You’ll also need to post any relevant documents (the guidance notes will tell you what to send). If you don't supply the documents you’re asked for, your application could be delayed.

The Student Finance Services European Team will return your documents to the address you’ve given in your country of origin.

Supplying evidence with your application

Proof of identity

If you’re applying for the first time, you’ll need to supply proof of identity. See the relevant form and guidance notes for details.

Proof of income

If you’re applying for certain types of finance, you may be asked to supply evidence of your income (and that of your household).

The documents required as proof of income will vary between EU countries. For details, see the relevant guidance notes on the 'Forms and Guides for EU Students' pages.

What happens to your application?

Once the Student Finance Services European Team have received your form, they will:

  • confirm that they've got it
  • work out if you are eligible to receive financial help, and if so how much - asking for further information if they need it
  • write telling you how much you are entitled to
  • pay the money directly to your college or university

Deadlines

You must send in your application form by the relevant deadline:

  • full-time students - no later than nine months from the first day of the academic year
  • part-time students - no later than six months from the first day of the academic year

If your circumstances change

If your personal circumstances change, you should email or write to the Student Finance Services European Team.

This includes changes to your:

  • address
  • marital status
  • parents' marital status

If you change, suspend or leave your course, the Student Finance Services European Team will need confirmation from your university or college.
