Teacher training funding

Undergraduates and postgraduates can get help with the costs of their teacher training.

Undergraduates

You can get student finance for the following full or part-time teacher training courses:

  • initial teacher training (ITT) - including early years
  • school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT)

Postgraduates

You may be able to get student finance for the following full or part-time teacher training courses:

  • ITT - not including early years
  • Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)
  • SCITT

You’ll need to apply for undergraduate student finance to get funding for your teacher training.

If you already have qualified teacher status, you cannot get an undergraduate tuition fee loan.

Early years ITT

You cannot apply for student finance if you’re a postgraduate early years ITT trainee. Your fees will be paid by DfE. You may also be eligible for an early years ITT bursary.

Bursaries

You may also be able to get a postgraduate training bursary or an undergraduate training bursary from the Department for Education (DfE).
