Ecolabels

Ecolabels usually cover a wide range of environmental impacts across the lifetime of a product, from production and use through to disposal. Some, like the European Ecolabel, shown below, apply to many different types of product.

European Ecolabel

The European Ecolabel (or 'Flower') is an official Europe-wide award for non-food products and services that minimise impacts on the environment. Products are independently certified and have to meet strict criteria for all the main environmental impacts throughout their life cycle.

In the UK, products with the Flower label include household cleaners, kitchen rolls, toilet tissue, paints, televisions and even holiday accommodation. You can download a list of ecolabelled products and services in the UK by clicking on the Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) link below and scrolling two-thirds of the way down the page.

Other ecolabels

Some countries or areas also have national ecolabel schemes, like the Nordic Swan in Scandinavia (shown here) and the Blue Angel in Germany.
