Taxing your vehicle in the disabled tax class

If you’re taxing in the disabled tax class for the first time or just renewing your free disabled tax disc, the documents you have will determine if you can tax your vehicle online, at a Post Office® branch or Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) local office.

Your exemption certificate

To tax in the disabled tax class you’ll need exemption certificate DLA404 if you get Disability Living Allowance or exemption certificate WPA442 if you get the War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.

The exemption certificate must:

  • be valid on the day the tax disc comes into force
  • only be used to tax one vehicle at a time
  • be completed by you and stamped by the counter clerk each time you apply for a free tax disc

If it has expired, is full, has been altered or your name and address has changed, you’ll need to get a replacement from the Agency that issued it before you can tax.

How to tax in the disabled tax class for the first time

Use your exemption certificate with your Registration Certificate to tax in person or by post at a Post Office® branch that issues tax discs. See ‘Tax with a Registration Certificate’ below.

If you’ve just bought the vehicle and have a New Keeper Supplement, you can use this with your exemption certificate to tax in person or by post at your nearest DVLA local office. See ‘Tax with a New Keeper Supplement’ below.

How to renew your disabled tax disc

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the 15th day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

Tax online or by phone

Use the reference number shown on your Registration Certificate. Your entitlement will be checked electronically.

Tax with a reminder

Use the V11 reminder in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs or by post to the address shown on the reminder form.

Take or send:

  • completed V11 reminder
  • insurance certificate or cover note (if applicable) – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
  • valid MOT certificate – if the car is over three years old (not required to tax invalid carriages)
  • exemption certificate - DLA404 or WPA442 - not required to tax invalid carriages

Tax with a Registration Certificate

You can tax at a Post Office branch® that issues tax discs. Include your Registration Certificate and completed V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’.

Tax with a New Keeper Supplement

You’ll need to tax at your nearest DVLA local office. Include a completed a V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C)’ and V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’.

The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for two months from the date you bought your vehicle. If it’s out of date, you’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name – please see ‘Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement’ below.

Application forms V10 and V62

You can download the V10 or V62 or collect them any Post Office® branch or DVLA local office.

Tax without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement

If you’re shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records, you can tax at your nearest DVLA local office.

You’ll need to complete a V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C)' which must be accompanied by £25 (fee for a Registration Certificate) and include this with your application to tax.

If you’re not shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records you cannot tax the vehicle. You’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name. To get one, fill in form V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate’ and post to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD. You may have to wait up to four weeks for a new certificate to arrive. In the meantime, you should keep your vehicle off the road.

Change of name, address or vehicle details

How you notify the changes will depend if you’re taxing with or without a reminder.
