  • Published: Friday, 11 January 2008

Directgov is seeking private sector experience and offering a unique opportunity to influence and shape the future of public service delivery in the UK. Three non-executive directors are to be recruited for a three-year appointment.

Role specification

Directgov is already well advanced in becoming the single digital channel to government services for the public and has now been placed firmly at the heart of the government’s plan to transform the delivery of public services around the needs and expectations of citizens. Directgov has been operational since 2004, and is driving a step change in its business in order to meet the challenge of its expanded role within the transformational government programme.

The role of the non-executive director is to:

  • contribute to and participate in the effective running of the Directgov Board
  • use external experience to provide constructive and effective challenge in Board discussions and decision-making
  • provide independent advice on matters relating to individual areas of expertise, such as audit and risk, running an internet business, or customer service

In addition, one of the non-executives appointed will be required to chair the Audit and Risk Committee.

Period of appointment

From early 2008 for three years.

Time commitment

About 12 days per annum. Meetings will be held in London.

Remuneration

£10,000 + £2000 for chairing the Audit & Risk Committee. Expenses will also be paid, within the rules of the Department of Work and Pensions expenses policy.

Person specification

Directgov intends to appoint three non-executive Board members to be recruited from the private sector.  As well as broad general management experience, it is looking for individuals with experience in one of the three areas of:

  • finance and risk management
  • retail marketing and sales
  • online and other digital channel delivery

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a clear focus on meeting customer needs and should have main board experience within a large private sector business.

In addition, one of the non-executives appointed will be required to chair the Audit and Risk Committee.
