10:10 - resolve to cut carbon emissions in 2010

This coming year, 10:10 is asking individuals, schools, hospitals and workplaces to cut the UK's carbon emissions by ten per cent.

More than 51,000 individuals and several thousand businesses and organisations have already signed up. These include:

• city councils: Liverpool, Manchester, London and others
• more than 1200 schools and colleges
• businesses: among them Logica, O2, TMobile, Time Out Group, Walker Books
• Royal Mail, the Cabinet Office, boroughs and district councils

Cutting carbon pollution saves money

Some ways you can reduce your carbon emissions:

• cutting back on journeys you don't need to make
• replacing old light bulbs with energy saving ones
• using a delivery service instead of driving to the shops
• insulating your home - this can knock £300 per year off your household fuel bill
• fitting solar tiles to a south facing roof - this can generate free hot water or extra power that you can sell to your energy supplier

Homeowners and landlords can get capital grants towards the cost of insulation or fitting solar tiles. Contact your energy supplier for details, or call the 'Act on CO2' advice line on 0800 512 012. 

In 2010, watch out for “Pay As You Save” (PAYS) - a new way to pay for whole-house energy retrofits.
