Travel planning at half term

  • Published: Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Families travelling over the half-term break this October are being advised by the Highways Agency to plan their route and check for delays before they set off.

Think ahead if driving at half term

With nearly all schools breaking up towards the end of the week, the Highways Agency is expecting motorways and major A roads to be busier than usual on the evening of Friday 23 October.

Extra traffic is also expected during the middle of the day and evenings, from 26 to 30 October.

Road use changes at half term

Traffic patterns for previous autumn half terms show quieter morning traffic, with extra cars on the road in the middle of the day and the evening. The change is thought to be linked to families going on day trips and visiting relatives.

Live updates: keep informed

It's best to use the agency's journey planning tools to check conditions on the motorways and major A roads before you set out.

You can also get live traffic information as you travel from:

  • overhead message signs on motorways
  • traffic radio

Before you leave, or while stopped for a break, you can:
