Crime in England and Wales: quarterly figures

The number of crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales was down by 4 per cent during the second quarter of 2009 compared with the same period the year before. Based on British Crime Survey (BCS) interviews in the year to June 2009, the number of household crimes fell by 4 per cent, while personal crime remained stable.

The 4 per cent fall in recorded crime in the second quarter of 2009 was largely down to decreases in:

  • violence against the person - down by 1 per cent
  • recorded offences against vehicles - down by 12 per cent
  • criminal damage - down by 5 per cent
  • 'other theft' offences - down by 3 per cent

Police recorded robberies rose by 1 per cent overall and those involving knives or sharp instruments also increased by 1 per cent over the same period.

Provisional statistics recorded by the police showed a 5 per cent fall in gun crime.

Household crime

Household crime was down by 4 per cent in the second quarter of 2009 compared with the year before.

The fall was largely down to a six per cent decrease in vandalism. All other BCS household crime types remained stable.

Personal crime

There was no change in the level of personal crime in April to June 2009.

BCS personal crime categories are:

  • violence
  • theft from the person
  • other personal theft

All of these remained stable.
