Broadband map of UK published

  • Published: Thursday, 7 July 2011

Ofcom has produced a new map that shows the availability, speed and take-up of broadband across the UK. The first interactive map of its kind, it gives a clear picture of broadband speeds and use in the UK. Future updates to the map will show the progress of the government's drive to deliver high speed broadband to more areas of the UK.

This static image shown here gives an idea of what the map looks like, but is not interactive. To benefit from the interactive features of the map, follow the link below to visit the Ofcom website.

If you choose 'superfast broadband availability' in the menu to the right of the map, Northern Ireland is mapped in green to show that superfast broadband is widely available, with 97 per cent of addresses served. This follows major investment by the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment in Northern Ireland, together with BT.

Around the UK islands of green on the map show areas where superfast broadband is widely available. Among them are densely populated areas such as Brighton and Bristol, alongside less obvious locations such as North East Lincolnshire, Dudley and Milton Keynes.

BT has announced plans to bring superfast broadband to 88 per cent of lines in the country by 2012.

Using the Ofcom broadband map

If you click on an area, a note pops up stating the name of the area, and information about broadband there. You can swap between views that display information about the following five factors:

  • overall broadband performance
  • average broadband take-up
  • the percentage of users with connection speeds of less than 2 Megabytes
  • the availability of superfast broadband
  • average modem sync speed

The interactive map forms part of Ofcom's ongoing work to provide useful information about broadband in the UK. Ofcom plans to publish a more detailed map later in the year.

Broadband Delivery UK

Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) – a team within DCMS – is in charge of delivering the government’s plan to ensure 90 per cent of the UK has superfast broadband by 2015. In May 2011, three new rural areas to receive superfast broadband were announced, funded by central and local government, as well as the private sector. These are:

  • Devon and Somerset
  • Norfolk
  • Wiltshire

The new areas add to existing superfast broadband pilots currently being set up, which are:

  • North Yorkshire
  • the Highlands and Islands of Scotland
  • Cumbria
  • Herefordshire borders
