Plans to streamline the Probate Service will cut bureaucracy for the thousands of bereaved families who use it every year.
The Probate Service is responsible for sending out the legal document that allows people to deal with the estate of a deceased person. It allows them to collect all the money, pay any debts and share out the estate.
Many people are unaware of the need for probate when a relative dies. The government plans to improve information about the service so that anyone who registers a death is automatically told about what they need to do and how to get help.
Constitutional Affairs Minister Lord Filkin said that too many people end up getting lost in a maze of bureaucracy at what is already a very stressful time.
"They don't know that they need to apply for probate and even if they do they don't know where to go for help or guidance.
"That is why we are going to simplify the process, offering better support and access to probate services for the bereaved."
Most applications for probate are made through solicitors, but around 80,000 people apply on their own every year. A helpline offering information about inheritance tax and probate is already up and running. The number is 0845 3020 900.
