Good planning usually makes a trip - however short – easier. Although there are a number of things to think about before going away – whatever your age – there are a few extra things to consider when you are getting older.

Free passports for over 78s

If you're a British national born on or before 2 September 1929, you can apply for a free standard 32-page ten-year passport from the Identity and Passport Service.

Senior Railcard

Concessionary rail cards offer savings on hundreds of different journeys. You can save up to a third on fares with the Senior Railcard for over 60s.

Bus passes

Bus and coach travel is often much the cheapest option for any journey and there's a wide range of travel concessions on offer on the buses to make getting out and about even more affordable.

If you are 60 or over you are entitled to free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England. If you live in Wales or Scotland, you are also entitled to free bus travel in your local area.

Local transport

In your area there may be community transport services available to you. If you have difficulties using public transport there are special transport services available that can assist you. These services do vary by local area and there are often fewer services in rural areas.
