Guide to working to suit you

If you're over 50, you may want to continue working but may want to work flexible hours and when it suits you. You might want to be 'your own boss' and set up a business or become self-employed. Or you may want to know what your options are for working after retirement.

Becoming self-employed if you are over 50

Deciding to begin a new business venture by becoming self-employed is a big step, especially if you are close to retirement. But it's not one that you need to take on your own - there is help available.

Changes to age discrimination for over 50s

New regulations came into force on 1 October 2006 that make it unlawful for employers to discriminate against workers on the grounds of age. The laws mean workers of all ages have an equal chance of training and promotion in England, Wales and Scotland.

Working part-time after you retire

Reaching State Pension age doesn't mean you have to give up work - paid or voluntary. You can choose to keep on working while taking your State Pension, or put off claiming your State Pension and get paid more later on. There are schemes and incentives to help you find work.

Part-time work

You may want to work part-time to allow you to do other things or because you don't want a full-time job. Working part-time can be a good way of balancing your work and your personal commitments. If you work part-time, you have the right to be treated fairly in comparison to your full-time colleagues.

Flexible working and work-life balance

It's important to balance your work and home life. The right to ask for flexible working aims to help employers and workers agree on work patterns that suit everyone. Find out what flexible working is and how to apply for it.

Changing career

Thinking about a career change? It can sometimes be difficult to work out whether you just need a new challenge, or if it’s time to take a completely different direction. Finding the right career can be hugely rewarding, so it’s worth putting some effort into career planning. Start by thinking about what motivates you as a person, then identify careers that match your skills and interests.

Guide to volunteering for over 50s

Voluntary organisations recognise that older people bring a wealth of skills and expertise to volunteering. By passing on your skills and learning you can make a difference to people’s lives. Volunteering is also a good way to make new friends and improve general levels of health and fitness.

Taking up your State Pension later

If you put off claiming your State Pension, you can earn either extra State Pension or a one-off taxable lump sum payment. Knowing your options helps you to make better decisions when you reach State Pension age.
