Table of passport fees, how to pay and refunds

Passport fees vary depending on the type of application and the service you use. The faster services are more expensive. This is a guide to costs and how to pay. You may be able to get a refund if Premium or Fast Track services do not meet their guaranteed times.

* IPS recommends this service. As well as the fee shown you must pay a handling charge to the Post Office. The charge is currently £6.85 but this will increase to £8.00 from 1 January 2010.

** If you were born on or before 2 September 1929 you are eligible for a free standard 32-page ten-year passport. For Fast Track and Premium services you pay the difference between the standard passport fee and the fee for the enhanced service at the counter. For example, usual Fast Track fee is £112.50 less standard passport fee of £77.50. The fee you would pay therefore is £35.

*** A jumbo passport is available through Premium service only if you are applying to renew an existing passport.

Turnaround times

The Fast Track one-week and Premium one-day services are guaranteed, but times for the Check & Send service and standard postal applications are not. They may vary with demand.

You must always make an appointment to apply in person using the Premium or Fast Track services. You can do this by calling the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. The line is open seven days a week between 7.00am and 11.00 pm.

For the current turnaround times see 'Timetable for passport applications'. See 'Urgent passport applications' for more information on Fast Track and Premium services.

What the fee covers

The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) does not make a profit. Passport fees cover the costs of providing passport services in the UK.

Part of the fee is called ‘the consular premium’ and is added by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). It covers the costs of providing consular help to British nationals who find themselves in difficulty while overseas.

Postage

The passport fee includes return of your new passport by Secure Delivery and the return of your supporting documents by second-class post.

IPS can also return your supporting documents by Secure Delivery for an extra fee of £3. This fee is waived if you:

  • renew your passport with a 48-page jumbo passport
  • were born before 2 September 1929

IPS will not pay for any loss or delay that is a result of using Royal Mail first- or second-class services.

When you can claim a refund of Premium/Fast Track fee

You can claim a refund of the Premium/Fast Track fee (not the standard fee) if IPS fails to deliver the service within the specified time. However, IPS will not refund the fee if this failure is due to circumstances beyond its reasonable control.

You can also claim a refund of the Premium or Fast Track service fee on compassionate grounds if you:

  • need to travel urgently because of the death or serious illness of a family member, friend or business associate
  • are travelling abroad for medical treatment
  • are seriously ill, or are the carer of a seriously ill person, and your travel has been arranged by a charitable/religious organisation

IPS assesses each claim for a refund on its own merit.

You can download a Refund Claim form here or request one from the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000. Please read the notes that come with the form and fill out every section before sending it to the Customer Service Manager at the Regional Passport Office at which you made your application.

  • 4.00 pm in London
  • 1.30 pm in Liverpool
  • 1.00 pm in Peterborough
