Young people in Wiltshire were mailed information about the Youth Funds and the scheme was advertised on local radio. Here's a sample of the projects that received money.
A group of boys in the Bemerton Heath area of Salisbury heard about Youth Funds from youth workers in their estate. The area doesn't have much to offer teenagers and the boys were fed up with hanging around on the streets. Some of them had started getting into trouble with the police.
The group decided to talk to workers at their local youth centre to see if they could help them start a fishing club. The boys needed money to buy fishing rods and tackle so they could get away from their normal surroundings and enjoy some peace and quiet beside the river.
Workers at the centre helped them through the application process and they were awarded £2,700 to buy equipment for their club.
A local teenager was really into music and wanted to teach others how to DJ at his youth centre in Malmesbury. With the support of youth workers, he made a successful application for almost £1,650 to buy a set of CD decks.
The panel which awarded the money liked the fact he was very clear about what he wanted to do in his application. He was able to show that other teens would be interested in coming to the youth centre because they wanted to learn from him.
Workers from a church project called Shine talked to teenagers living on a nearby travellers' site to find out what would really make a difference to their lives.
The site is in an isolated area, so it was difficult for young people living there to travel to the libraries to use computers and access the internet to help them with schoolwork.
They were awarded nearly £9,500 to pay for a wireless broadband connection to the site and laptop computers.
Teens going to Atworth Youth Club were fed up with their leaking roof. They found out how much it would cost to have a new roof and put together an application for £7,500.
They pointed out this would mean the youth centre could stay open for the next 15-20 years. The youth panel awarding the grants thought this made good financial sense and awarded them the money.
