Transcript of video: Youth Fund projects

How did you find out about these Youth Funds?

- "Community advertised."

What was the thinking behind the project?

- "Education, sports, leisure.  Things like that."

- "Just facilities basically, so that the kids have things they can do and use here."

How did you come up with the idea?

- "Well, we’d like to get funding so that at least we have a bit of funding so that we can actually have the play area built and that there’s something to do for the kids and we have funding so we can go on trips, and stuff like that."

- "People coming together, meeting new people, getting out of the house instead of staying in."

- "And the education, leisure is available for anyone.  Any religion, race, anyone comes.  And we’ve got the Bengali school which anyone comes, at the moment."

- "So we have like a bond with our baby."

- "Somewhere to take them other than the youth centre and somewhere that’s a bit of fun for them as well, a bit of adventure."

How did you go about planning the project?

- "We looked at the places we’re going to do, for example, swimming we might charge a certain amount and that’s the hall hire and how many people are coming.  So, or a lifeguard swimming may take 20 people a lifeguard, so we add the total amount to that and we find out, yeah, we find out the total."

- "What we’ve done in the past as well is we’ve done swimming and badminton but we couldn’t do them on a larger scale.  So we added up how much it would cost when we did it, but on a larger scale and we just worked out how much it would cost."

- "It came from all of us in the group.  We sat down and did a brainstorm and everyone gave their own input, actually what wanted they to achieve from doing this actual project.  And we all got different roles, like the chairperson, the secretary, things like that, so we have confidence in doing, inputting, talking and communicating with each other."

What were the biggest obstacles you came across?

- "Basically, just getting the women to, you know, like the mums and their kids to come and meet up at a certain time.  Because, you know, sometimes when you’re phoning someone you get people who’ve been told three times by their friends and someone hasn’t been told at all and it’s just hard to get a set place where everyone can meet."

- "It’s hard to communicate with people at the moment."

- "I think actually, because what happens it’s a group and some people weren’t able to come.  Like getting input from everyone it was a bit hard to do so more people contributed and everyone put in their ideas.  Sometimes someone new came and we had to go over that again, what we already went over before."

Has the project helped you in other ways?

- "I think it’s made us, I think we grew closer to each other, because we all gave our own input and everything to actually, to answer what we were writing, each of the spelling, the words and everything, so I think it was quite good."

- "Helped us to get out and about. meet new people and the sports helps us to get fitter.  The government wants you to get out and about, get fit."

What would you say to other people that want to make changes to their area?

- "Well, try to get people involved.  And don’t like, make it boring, cause nobody wants to be bored at a club.  Make it so they can enjoy themselves and we like, well basically enjoying themselves."
