What has happened so far?

Eco-towns are proposed new communities providing affordable, well-designed and energy-efficient housing, with easy access to shops, schools and green spaces. There will be strict standards to meet to make sure the plans provide the communities you need.

The process so far:

  • a brochure, the 'Eco-towns Prospectus', explaining eco-towns and inviting proposals from local authorities and developers was published in July 2007
  • an initial shortlist of locations was announced in April 2008 and many of you gave your views in a consultation which ran to the end of June 2008
  • a 'challenge' panel of experts have examined the proposals to advise on potential improvements
  • ‘Eco-towns: Living a Greener Future’, which announced the shortlisted locations for potential eco-towns, was published in April 2008
  • a consultation on a draft Planning Policy Statement (PPS) (including the standards required of eco-towns) closed at the end of April 2009
  • detailed assessments of the eco-towns policy and potential locations (called Sustainability Appraisals) have also been published
  • a series of roadshows have been held in the areas where it’s proposed that eco-towns are located, to allow you to find out more and give your opinions
  • a final shortlist of eco-town sites was announced on 16 July 2009, along with the final PPS that sets the final standards that eco-towns will have to meet

All shortlisted sites will have to go through the local planning process, and proposals for new eco-town sites could still be considered if they meet the standards set in the new PPS.
